Alison Sutcliffe Profile head shot

Alison Sutcliffe - Person-Centred Psychotherapist & EMDR Therapist

You

Is life feeling difficult right now?  Maybe you're feeling anxious or down for reasons that are clear e.g. bereavement or trauma…or maybe you’re feeling anxious or down and you’re not quite sure why?

Whatever is happening for you, I have provided a supportive space for many others to find relief from distress and begin living their life to their fullest.

Us

Research states that the relationship between you and I is key to you getting what you want out of psychotherapy.  Some of our struggles will have been born out of relationships and therefore it is within a therapeutic relationship, that lacks judgement and features warmth and authenticity, where your concerns can be addressed.

My Approach

Across 15 years of person-centred psychotherapy practice I have supported people with a wide range of experiences and concerns such as abuse, anxiety, loss, depression, loneliness, relationship issues, feeling lost or stuck.  My person-centred ethos means that I believe we are all doing our very best to navigate our lives with the resources that we have available to us. I have witnessed time and again how, within a facilitative therapeutic relationship, we can begin to feel relief from distress and begin living life more fully.

Changes that can occur with person-centred therapy include:

◦ your view of, and attitude towards, yourself can change

◦ you can discover new feelings and have new experiences

◦ you can feel more self-determining e.g. a sense of being able to make decisions for yourself based on your own sense of a situation

◦ you can generally feel more confident in your ability to trust yourself

◦ you can experience a greater sense of acceptance and compassion towards yourself and also a deeper connection towards others

I also offer EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) - this is a therapy that was designed to help alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. EMDR is now also more widely utilised to help people address a wide variety of concerns such as anxiety and depression.

I work in an a non-discriminatory and LGBT+ affirmative way.  I am continually informing myself about the breadth of backgrounds and experiences that come together to make each one of us unique.  My aim is to meet you fully regardless of our similarities and differences.

Qualifications & Experience Headlines

I have a Masters in Contemporary Person-Centred Psychotherapy and Applications (Metanoia Institute 2022) and I first qualified back in 2010 via a Diploma in Practitioner Counselling Skills (person-centred approach) ( City Lit 2010).

I have special interest in trauma, sexual violence and loss.  I am fully trained in offering EMDR (eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing) - this is a therapy that helps people alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories (although it can be applied to wide range of concerns).

As well as a busy private practice I have also offered psychotherapy, via Survivors Network, to those of us who have experienced sexual violence.

My experience to date, beyond my thriving private practice, includes offering psychotherapy within a variety of charities in addition to facilitating groups within the NHS, colleges and charities.
